ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A vacant lot on Marietta Square remains empty after Ted’s Montana Grill withdrew from its city-approved plan to build on the property following online criticism.

The restaurant chain announced it would pull back from the development due to community concerns about bringing a chain restaurant to the historic square rather than an independent business.

“Historically, our restaurants have been met with excitement and strong local support, and we rarely encounter negative sentiment,” the chain said. “In this case, however, early conversations on social media reflected concerns about welcoming a chain restaurant rather than an independent one, which understandably gave us pause before making such a significant investment.”

Tony Hoops, owner of Satoria, a women’s boutique that has operated on the square for 12 years, said he was excited about the prospect of Ted’s moving in next door to his business.

“Super excited,” Hoops said. “You know, I’ve needed something, a spark to bring the people back out again.”

Hoops said the lot has remained vacant since he opened his business, with only a fence separating it from his shop.

“It’s like a punch in the gut,” Hoops said about Ted’s withdrawal.

Evelyn Waters, who works at Willie Rae’s Social House two doors down from Satoria, said she believes a major chain doesn’t fit the square’s character.

“It’s so out of place for this square,” Waters said. “It kinda pushes out the smaller companies when it comes to people going out on the square, ‘Oh, I’ll try this today.’”

Other business owners remain optimistic about future development. Mike McMahon of Divine Rites Tattoo said he believes something will eventually fill the space.

“Something will,” he said. “We’re still growing. That’s still great.”

Waters suggested the square could benefit from nightlife options.

One barrier to attracting businesses is the cost of building an edifice, which would run into the millions of dollars, limiting the number of family-owned businesses that could move in.

MARIETTA, Ga. — A popular Marietta Square dining spot is currently closed, but will reopen soon, for a rebranding and relaunch initiative.

Piastra, a 10-year-old restaurant in Marietta Square, closed for two weeks so mother-son owner-operators Chef Greg Lipman and Betty Bahl could shift the direction of the restaurant and offer new food opportunities for their guests.

The restaurant first opened in 2015 as a spot for classic Italian fare.

In 2025, Lipman and Bahl decided they were going to change things up and bring Marietta residents and other customers a new menu with fresh ingredients, homemade meals and customized meat and fish, plus other dry goods, dairy products and more.

Piastra will reopen on Jan. 19 as Asher & Rose Modern Grocers, with a grand reopening celebration planned for February.

TRENDING STORIES:

The restaurant’s bar will still feature what the owners describe as an award-winning wine selection, as well as offering new regional offerings, a new craft cocktail menu and a mix and match craft beer program.

“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our loyal customers and are looking forward to greeting you in the New Year at Asher & Rose,” Lipman said in a statement. “This temporary closure allows us to make some exciting updates that will allow us to bring an entirely new experience rooted in the legacy hospitality that the Marietta Square is historically known for.”

Here’s what the owners say customers can expect at Asher & Rose’s grand reopening:

“While we are excited to introduce new enhancements and offerings in our Modern Grocery, we want to assure our Piastra customers that their beloved Italian favorites and mainstays – like our Pizzas, Pastas, and fresh food specials will remain unchanged. “And the warm, welcoming atmosphere that we have always been known for, those aren’t going anywhere,” Bahl said.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A Marietta home caught on fire on New Year’s Day after spent fireworks kicked up sparks in a trash can, according to firefighters.

Crews were called to the home on Silver Leaf Drive at around 5 a.m. No injuries have been reported.

The bulk of the damage appears to be to the home’s chimney. The homeowner told firefighters they were shooting off fireworks to celebrate the new year and placed the remains in the garbage can, which later caught on fire.

With recent dry conditions and high winds, officials have been concerned about fire risks for days. A Red Flag Warning was in effect earlier this week, which officials said added an extra layer of danger for those shooting off fireworks.

“The unpredictability of a firework mixed in with the factor of the wind is what we really want to be cautious of, because the wind can carry some of these sparks,” Atlanta Fire & Rescue Captain Andrew Anderson previously told Atlanta News First.

The incident in Marietta wasn’t the only house fire in metro Atlanta on Thursday. Firefighters were called to a northwest Atlanta home on Vanderbilt Court at around 1 a.m. after a blaze broke out on the back patio.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, the homeowners told Atlanta News First. Firefighters did not comment on what caused the flames.

In Gwinnett County, fire officials said they were called to 12 house fires and four apartment fires overnight, but none escalated into a major blaze.

As temperatures continue to drop, remember to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from any heat source — including fireplaces, space heaters and candles.

Keep Georgia Beautiful was founded in 1978 and has advocated for community improvements to benefit the environment. Their “Bring One for the Chipper” initiative has helped to repurpose over 6 million trees.

In 2024, the group collected and recycled about 35,000 trees into mulch for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects and individual homes. Over 3,000 were sunk into lakes to provide fish habitats, and over 6,000 were repurposed for fuel or other uses.

The metro Atlanta dropoff locations, dates and times to recycle Christmas trees are below. There is also a full list of statewide dropoff locations available.
