Here's what we know.

MARIETTA, Ga. — Approximately 300 students and staff at Walton High School in Marietta are getting tested on Tuesday after a possible tuberculosis (TB) exposure, health officials said.

According to Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH), students and staff were tested at the high school on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and will return to receive their test results on Thursday, Oct. 31.

"CDPH and the School’s administration have identified those who may have been exposed to TB germs and will be administering a mandatory Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) to those individuals," the CDPH wrote.

A spokesperson for Cobb County Schools said the district "continues to work closely with the local public health department to protect student and staff health while respecting medical privacy."

What to do if you've been notified and haven't been tested for TB

CDPH officials said that TB testing is mandatory, and if the notified students and faculty did not get tested on Tuesday, they would need to see their private physician to be tested.

"Because the testing is mandatory, if they do not receive the TST at the school today, they will be responsible for providing a written report on a physician’s office letterhead verifying the test was completed, with the date and test result before they will be permitted to return to school," the CDPH said.

What does a positive tuberculosis test result mean?

According to health officials, a positive test means they have been exposed to someone with tuberculosis.

For those with a positive reaction, the CDPH said they would then have a chest X-ray. At that point, if the X-ray is negative, they'll be offered preventative medication. However, if the chest X-ray is positive, they'll receive treatment for the disease.

More information about TB from East Cobb Pediatrics

East Cobb Pediatrics also wrote a letter with more information about tuberculosis (TB).

"We would like to reiterate that those students who did not receive a letter from the DPHdo NOT need to be tested and were deemed safe from potential exposure by the DPH," East Cobb Pediatrics wrote.

Health officials said testing can be done via a blood or skin test.

"For the TB skin test, a small needle will be used to put testing material under the skin. The skin will then need to be re-evaluated in 2 days to see if there was a reaction," East Cobb Pediatrics added. "We understand that receiving this letter could be distressing for your family, but we want to reassure you that the Department of Health will appropriately screen for any potential infection. We ask that you please cooperate with their efforts to make sure your student is properly monitored post-exposure."

MARIETTA, Ga. – Since Hurricane Helene landed on Sept. 27, the Georgia Army National Guard has provided response and recovery support to residents affected by the storm, working alongside civilian agencies from across the United States.

Operating out of a centralized logistics hub in Macon, Georgia, daily convoys of National Guard Soldiers and equipment transport much-needed supplies to affected areas across the state. The Georgia Guard is working alongside civilian agencies, including the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) – the operation’s lead agency – as well as the Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia Department of Transportation, and out-of-state help from the New Jersey All Hazards Incident Management Team.

“When I think of it, it’s really our primary mission to support local communities in times of need,” said U.S. Army Capt. Charles Smith, a logistics officer, 148th Brigade Support Battalion.

Capt. Smith and soldiers operating from the logistics hub have been working with civilian agency personnel from before dawn until well after sunset. These Soldiers embody their unit’s motto, “Send Me,” by volunteering to make additional early and late supply runs, increasing capacity expectations, and reaching dozens of counties across the state.

Hurricane Helene has caused massive power outages, non-potable water, and road blockages across Georgia, cutting a swath of damage from Valdosta to Augusta. The Georgia National Guard’s logistics task force has an ongoing mission to deliver trailers with ready-to-eat meals and bottled water to designated supply drop-off zones. Local authorities are distributing the supplies to residents, meeting these demands. By bringing tarps, the task force also provides a means for residents to protect their homes from the elements temporarily.

For the storm-affected areas that are more remote and challenging to reach, the Guard is deploying helicopters loaded with supplies at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport in Macon and flying them to locations that are challenging for trucks to reach.

Gov. Brian Kemp activated 2,500 Georgia National Guardsmen as of Oct. 2. The governor is entrusting the Guard members to assist the teams already on the ground and has requested additional resources be brought to Georgia communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The Georgia National Guard will continue to partner with GEMA/HS and other local, state, and federal entities at the governor’s direction.

“We’ve been able to support this and resource it appropriately, and I’m really proud of what our Soldiers have done,” said Smith.

In brief:

A routine traffic stop by the Georgia State Patrol on Oct. 1 led to the discovery of a large methamphetamine conversion lab in a residential neighborhood in Marietta near multiple elementary schools. The discovery was made by DEA Atlanta special agents and task force officers following the traffic stop.

Authorities arrested three individuals in connection with the lab on Pair Road, and seized approximately 500 kilograms of methamphetamine. The suspects who were found with Guatemalan passports are believed to be undocumented immigrants.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Robert Murphy would only name two of the three suspects: Raul Morales and Anthony Alfredo Najaro Revolorio. "They were here solely to produce methamphetamine for distribution not only in the Atlanta area but up and down the coast of the U.S.," he said.

Murphy pointed out the significance of the nationalities involved, saying, "This is interesting to me from an investigative side. We clearly are making a dent in the chemists they are sending over because these two are from Guatemala. Even though they are associated with the cartel, they came from Guatemala and not from Mexico, so we might hopefully be making a dent."

Meth lab busted in Marietta, officials give more details

A routine traffic stop in Cobb County led to the discovery of a large meth lab in Marietta. Officials held a press conference to release more details on their findings and the suspects.

The chemicals used in methamphetamine conversion labs are highly volatile, posing a significant risk of fire or explosion if improperly handled. This particular lab was located near nine elementary schools, seven middle schools, and nine high schools, heightening concerns for the safety of the community.

"Yeah, I think one of my agents told me they saw young girls riding their bicycles out literally in front of the house," SAC Murphy said. "Our teams have to go in full hazmat material, including breathers and tanks and everything. It's just dangerous chemicals."

The house looks like many of the other homes on the street, but the DEA says no one lived in the house. It was used only as a meth conversion lab. Neighbors say agents lined the street in front of the home Tuesday afternoon as people were out walking and young chrilen were riding their bikes nearby.

"Every part of the house was used for drying, allowing the crystalizing of the meth, that you see here. The other parts of the house were used to convert the liquid into the meth," said Murphy.

Over 1,100 lbs of meth found in Marietta neighborhood

Officers found more than 1,100 pounds of meth inside a home in a quiet Marietta neighborhood, not far from playing children and elementary schools.

Residents say the people who they thought were living in the home had only been there for a few weeks. They're glad law enforcement caught them so quickly and seized the drugs.

The Drug Enforcement Administration said agents were tipped off last week, leading to the discovery of a major methamphetamine production site. The raid took place in what is typically described as a quiet neighborhood near several schools.

"When we walked in, the smell of meth was overwhelming," agents reported. The meth seized was primarily in the form of meth oil, stored in large garbage cans and ready to be processed into methamphetamine.

Murphy highlighted the scale and unusual location of the operation. "What's unusual about this situation is this is what we usually find in the jungles of Mexico, not in a neighborhood of Marietta with at least a dozen schools within a several-mile circumference, including an elementary school four-tenths of a mile away."

Authorities estimate that the 500 kilograms of meth seized would have had a street value of $1.5 million.

Murphy also noted the sophistication of the operation, which he described as both large and complex. "This requires highly experienced, chemist-type-level people to accomplish something like this. It was a very, as you can see, unlike what we normally see in a meth house or conversion lab. This was very clean, a huge operation."

While Murphy said the team knew which cartel the arrested trio was affiliated with, he did not name it during the presser. Instead, he said the DEA was mainly concerned about Sinaloa, Jalisco New Generation and La Familia in the metro Atlanta area.

Authorities expect more arrests as the investigation continues.

Got Georgia on your mind? Many of us do!

In fact, it was just announced Georgia has broken tourism records yet again.

Of course, the main getaways we all desire are the bustling city of Atlanta, followed by the timeless southern bell of Savannah, depending on your vibe.

Atlanta has made many headlines as of late as one of the cheapest city breaks in the U.S., while Savannah has long been a staple for those preferring ‘southern hospitality' and quintessential small town charm.

As such, you're all but alone when visiting Savannah, where you'll be sharing photo-ops with tourists from numerous postcard-worthy historic homes to scenic parks and old-timey streets.

But there's one Georgia city just north of Atlanta that's super easy to reach yet often overlooked.

The lovely town of Marietta boasts all the charm of Savannah but without the crowds!

There are many fascinating facets to Atlanta, but as we all known with any big city comes travel frustrations.

One of the most common headaches for Atlanta tourists is the ongoing traffic!

That's okay, though. All you gotta do is take the exit marked “Marietta,” and your problem is solved!

On a good day, Marietta is less than half an hour from the ATL, which explains why this hidden gem has been overshadowed by the allure of Atlanta.

Conversely, Savannah is nearly a 4-hour drive as it's located along the coast, making Marietta much easier to reach from one of America's busiest hubs, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Marietta may not have a towering skyline, professional sports teams, or the World of Coca-Cola (yes, it's a real place!), but that's all part of what makes this delightful town more enticing to visit.

Many places across the South ooze small town charm with historic buildings, boutique shops, and old school diners.

Check, check, and check for all of the above in Marietta.

What makes visiting downtown here special, however, is the bustling ‘Square', which locals and travelers in the know flock to for a good time day and night.

In fact, the town's motto is ‘Meet me on the square'. When the town is buzzing with action, in all likelihood, it started in Marietta Square.

Surrounded by great eats, plentiful shopping, a quaint park, and even the Museum of History, Marietta can be your main stay or day trip away from Atlanta's hustle and bustle all while showcasing a similar charm you'd find in Savannah.

Boasting southern hospitality and beautiful architecture, you'll forget all about Savannah's crowds while you mingle with the locals.

One of the most popular times to visit is during the artisan and farmers markets held at the Square each week, but upcoming events Chalktoberfest and Fall Festival of Fun are surely circled on many calendars.

Of course, it wouldn't be a visit to the South without indulging in some savory eats! Nearby Marietta Square Market is home to over a dozen restaurants and bars whipping up a huge variety of cuisines from Korean, wood-fired pizza, to Jamaican.

Tip: For the best Southern cookin', check out highly touted The Marietta Local just off the Square, serving up classics like Fried Chicken and Collard Greens.

You may be mesmerized by Marietta's hometown feel, but don't forget to explore the outskirts!

As leaf-peepers begin wandering in droves in search of the perfect fall photo-ops, Marietta is among the South's best-kept secrets to roam the outdoors.

There are ample scenic hiking trails at your fingertips, especially through Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park boasting sweeping colorful views as well as Chattahoochee Nature Center – you know, way down yonder.

Except this time of year, it's not hotter than hoochie coochie.

For one of the easiest hikes, check out Indian Seats for just a 3.8-mile trek through a vibrant canopy of trees in the vast Sawnee Mountain Preserve less than an hour from Marietta.

Tip: Absorb Marietta's rich Civil War history while enjoying the gorgeous fall foliage at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park (tickets only $5!)
