After making landfall as a hurricane on Sunday, Oscar continues to weaken as the storm travels over eastern Cuba. It will bring high winds and heavy rain before making a sharp turn to the northeast, tracking towards the central Bahamas for the first half of the work week.
As of 11 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Oscar was located near 20.3 N and 75.4 W, or about 15 miles west-northwest of Guantanamo, Cuba, and about 80 miles west of the eastern tip of Cuba. Oscar is packing top sustained winds of 40 mph. It is moving west at 3 mph and has a minimum central pressure of 1001 mb, or 29.56 inches of mercury.
Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the north coast of the Cuban provinces of Las Tunas, Holguin, and Guantanamo to Puta Maisi. Additional Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the southeastern Bahamas, and the south coast of the Cuban Province of Guantanamo. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the central Bahamas.
Oscar made landfall along the northern coast of eastern Cuba as a hurricane early Sunday evening. It came onshore very close to the city of Baracoa in the Cuban province of Guantanamo. Oscar will turn to the northwest and then eventually the northeast late today through Wednesday. This is due to Oscar merging with an upper-level disturbance in the southwestern Atlantic.
Oscar’s small size and interaction with Cuba will lead to continued weakening through tonight. It will most likely remain a tropical storm through the first half of the week.
An extended period of tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain will likely occur over Cuba. Five to 10 inches of rainfall with isolated amounts up to 15 inches are expected through Tuesday. Two to 4 inches of rain, with 6 inches locally possible, will drench the southeastern Bahamas.
Oscar’s rainfall will trigger flash flooding and possible mudslides in eastern Cuba. A storm surge of 1 to 4 feet in eastern Cuba to Great Inagua Island and the southeastern Bahamas will pack significant coastal flooding as well.
Although there isn’t a tropical system threatening U.S. interests at the moment, it is wise not let down your guard. This has been a particularly dangerous hurricane season, with five hurricanes making landfall along the Gulf Coast this year, including Hurricanes Helene and Milton in just the past few weeks. The season officially runs through November 30, and storms often occur during November and even during the off-season.

The City of Milton updated its action plan late Wednesday afternoon, saying it anticipates worse conditions than previously predicted.
The city now says it expects between 6-10 inches of rain through midday Friday. Sustained winds could reach 60 mph, with gusts up to 80 mph. The worst is expected late Thursday and early Friday.
Milton officials say that if those conditions hold or worsen, all parts of the city could be affected. This would include downed trees and power lines, power outages, road closures, traffic congestion and the possibility of flash flooding.
City crews mobilized Wednesday to clear storm drains.
There have been regular meetings with all departments, including Fire, Police, Public Works and Parks and Recreation. Schedules have been adjusted to provide extra staffing, with Fire Corps volunteers ready to assist.

Forecasts can change, but residents are urged to have batteries and other essentials on hand.
The City of Roswell is posting updates about the weather to the city's website and is encouraging residents to remain "weather aware." To see the latest information from Roswell, click here.
